Import licenses:
BASAS has been appointed by the Central Firearm Register of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to assist the SAPS with the handling of applications with regard to the issuing of import or in-transit permits for firearms and ammunition in terms of the Firearms Control Act, 200 (Act 60 of 200). The applicant needs to complete the form SAPS 520, application for import/export permit and send the original completed form to South Africa for processing the application. The following supporting documentation needs to be forwarded together with the SAPS 520 application form:
· A certified copy of the passport.
· A certified copy of a license, permit, authorisation or any other documentary proof confirming the lawful possession of the firearm.
· A written mandate (appointment letter) as proof if a person was nominated to apply on behalf of the applicant. (mandate received must be an original document signed by the importer where after the appointed can apply on behalf of the importer).
· A written authorisation, which permits export from country of origin. (If not supplied by country of origin – written confirmation is required).

· In case of non-SA citizen proof of permanent residence must be submitted.
· Documentary proof with regard to the purpose of the visit issued by any one of the following persons or institutions, in South Africa confirming that, to the best of their knowledge and belief, the applicant will be using the firearm for the purpose set out in the application:
(1) A professional hunter, or the hunting outfitter licensed to conduct business in hunting, which will provide hunting to the foreign visitor.
(2) The accredited hunting association or sport-shooting organisation that is hosting the event or sport-shooting competition that the applicant will participate in.
(3) A person or organisation hosting a public event or historical re-enactment or display that requires the foreign visitors participation and use of the specific firearm.
· With regard to in transit and export permits an import permit from the recipient country is required.
